String Puppetry is one of the forms of Traditional Puppetry of India. The puppets are carved of wood and painted. Detailed costuming is done. A minimum of 6 strings per puppet is required. This may go up to 24 for special characters. The playing of the puppet involves skill in manipulation as well as knowledge of the ?tala? or the rhythm pattern. The puppet shows are usually musicals. Music and lyrics of this style of puppetry will be catchy and pleasing- aimed towards communication and entertainment. Harischandra is a story which finds mention in the Rig Veda. It is also found in the Bhagavatha and Devi Bhagavata. In India it has become an integrated part of literature of all languages. Harischandra and his wife Chandramati's commitment to truth through their arduous journey encountering strange and difficult circumstances and their eventual triumph is portrayed in the story. Harischandra and Chandramati are among the most celebrated and legendary couples of Bharatavarsha along with Nala-Damayanti, Savitri-Satyavan, and Rama-Seeta. The puppet show is aimed at giving the audience the story of this exemplary personality and a glimpse how the couple stayed firm in the path of Dharma and rose in spirit facing the most difficult situations in life. The character of Nakshatrika has been treated in the puppet play to entertain one and all. The puppet show is an hour long. About 30 puppets will be used in the show. The puppets are carved out of wood and are about 2.5 feet tall.
